It has been four weeks since the former Mayor Abner “Boss” Shifter’s death.
Occurring just a handful of days after the largely successful mayoral summit, former Mayor Shifter was found deceased in his home when staff arrived the next day. He was last seen the night before, perhaps acting more melancholy than he was wont, an anonymous staff member reported, but otherwise he appeared his usual self. When discovered the next day, the cries from across the city demanded an investigation into his death.
Abner Shifter presided over Auxientia during the tumultuous Six Year Siege, where the city faced intense bombardment from beyonders. No faction was left untouched by the assault and the Dunnmeadow neighborhood unfortunately bore the brunt of one particularly incendiary attack. Campaigning successfully through the years with the phrase “You can bet on the Boss,” it was only more recently that some of the murmurs of corruption became cries for accountability. Finally, Shifter lost his incumbency to the current Mayor Violent Canongrove, and it was through her efforts that the factions have found a new era of harmony.
Police initiated an extensive and thorough investigation of the former Mayor Shifter’s residence and close associates, although no evidence could be found at the scene of foul play. ‘There was no way a crooked man hadn’t met a crooked end’ seemed to be the consensus, but the coroner’s report released over three weeks ago indicated death from natural causes.
Abner Shifter’s body was buried in a private funeral three weeks ago attended by a small group of close friends.
Finding no leads and no true indication of foul play, police deemed the case closed, hoping that the former mayor will find peace.
Unfortunately, further evidence of his corruption continues to be uncovered. While the managers of Shifter’s remaining estate offer no comment, the rumors about former Mayor Shifter’s collaboration with the aggressor nation of Poyais during the Six Year Siege abound. Claims that he funneled money away from charitable organizations and had fore-knowledge of the attack on Dunnmeadow have also surfaced. More outlandish reports have even surfaced of the former mayor allowing human experimentation. Even if the mayor’s body might be at rest, his influence continues on.
